A atuação do missionário Robert Reid Kalley no contexto luso-brasileiro resultou em importantes acontecimentos para a história religiosa no século XIX. Situamos um escocês protestante no mundo luso-brasileiro determinado por intencionalidades, escolhas e ações, em meio às pressões religiosas, políticas e diplomáticas. O artigo utiliza fontes e obras produzidas sobre sua passagem na ilha da Madeira e na cidade de Petrópolis, no Rio de Janeiro, mas com o objetivo de uma possível releitura histórica e religiosa. Para os autores protestantes, ocorreu uma perseguição, para os jornais conservadores da época, foi uma ação oficial como proteção da ordem e da Igreja Católica com seus dogmas. Relacionando os episódios na ilha da Madeira e em Petrópolis, de 1838 a 1859, propõe-se olhar tais episódios a partir das relações políticas, jurídicas e diplomáticas daquela conjuntura. Compreende-se que estas duas décadas encerraram um ciclo histórico ligando Portugal e Brasil. ; The actions of the missionary Robert Reid Kalley in the Luso-Brazilian context had important results in the religious history in the 19th century. We describe a protestant Scotsman in the Luso-Brazilian world and determined by intentionalities, choices and actions, in the midst of religious, political and diplomatic pressures. The article uses sources and bibliography concerning the missionary’s time in the island of Madeira and in the city of Petrópolis, in Rio de Janeiro, but with the purpose to develop a possible historical and religious rereading. For protestant authors, there was a persecution, for the conservative newspapers of that time, what happened was an official action for protection of the order and of the Catholic Church and its dogmas. The article then relates the episodes that happened in Madeira Island and in Petrópolis, from 1838 to 1859, and aims at looking at these episodes from the political, legal and diplomatic point of view.
