학위논문 (석사) -- 서울대학교 대학원 : 인문대학 국어국문학과, 2021. 2. 나수호 . ; This thesis departs from the premise that the manifestation of patriarchal values in gisaeng folktales is a more complex issue than past research has assumed. With this in mind, this thesis is aimed towards examining the portrayal of gisaeng in oral folktales from a feminist perspective with particular focus on the gisaengs trickster-like nature. In chapter 2, based on the nature of the trick (a concept defined within this paper as the act of deceiving or making a fool out of someone through lies, pretense or secretive methods) performed by the gisaeng, this paper divided the tales of gisaeng containing a trick motif into two categories: Gangjahwaejeol-hyeong and Yakjajoryeok-hyeong. However, while embodying these patriarchal values, the gisaeng in these tales also use these values to their advantage. In Yakjajoryeok-heyong tales, the gisaeng is portrayed as a morally-upstanding figure who possesses agency, choosing of her own accord to help the disadvantaged and disheartened. She is also praised as a virtuous woman despite actively capitalising on her sexuality. However, what she achieves through her tricks is the realization of the hopes and ideals of men ...
