The paper studies the development of the Ukrainian literature of the 20th century through the generational prism, taking the texts by the Ukrainian writers who lived beyond the borders of Ukraine as the case material. The author pays attention primarily to the authors who found themselves in emigration under historical and political circumstances. It is posited that their creative works are the offshoot of the literature of the same generation that remained in the homeland. The parallels are drawn on the cases of the literary process of 1920–1930s, for instance Mykola Zerov and Pavlo Fylypovych in Ukraine – Yuriy Klen and Mykhaylo Orest in emigration; Neo-Baroque in Ukraine, represented by Pavlo Tychyn and Mykola Bazhan – Neo-Baroque stylistics by Yuriy Lypa in emigration. The author emphasizes that the Ukrainian poets–emigrants of this period did not have many chances of contact with poets from the countries of their living, but some similar features of their poetics have origin in the tendencies of universal development of European modernism: Yevhen Malanyuk – Julian Tuwim – Vitezslav Nezval. The second regularity can be observed when emigration is transformed into diaspora, i.e. when the writer as an artist is formed in the country of his/her living, when s/he is its citizen, but keeps the spiritual relation with the land of his/her ancestors and its culture. The scholar gives a title to such a situation as «the modus of meander», borrowing this fi gure from the poetess Vira Vovk: by analogy to the stream of the river, they keep the «memory» of its origin, but simultaneously absorb in themselves the features of the places «where it fl ows». Language is considered in this case as an important mark of this ancestral memory. The paper suggests that the generational approach to the diaspora and «continental» writers is not to be considered according to the principle of synchronism, since the related features can come to light only when the «counter wave» (the term by A. Veselovskyi) appears, which can be traced ...
