INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by microbial and host mediated inflammation that results in loss of periodontal attachment. A well-known bidirectional relationship exists between periodontitis and vascular endothelial growth factor, a potent angiogenic cytokine that regulates the proliferation and maturation of endothelial cells in wound healing as well as in inflammation. Numerous studies demonstrated the altered vasculature in periodontitis patients with diabetes. Also evidence based interrelationship exists between VEGF, Periodontitis and Diabetes. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Thus the aim of this study is to investigate and compare the expression of VEGF in gingival tissues of gingivitis patients, systemically healthy chronic periodontitis patients and in chronic periodontitis patients with diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A forty five gingival samples were collected, out of which 15 samples were collected from gingivitis patients (Group 1); 15 samples from systemically healthy chronic periodontitis subjects (Group 2) and 15 samples from chronic periodontitis subjects with diabetes (Group 3). Immunohistochemical detection of VEGF was performed in all the collected samples. Number of cells with positive expression of VEGF was counted in a single field with 20X magnification. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in periodontitis patients with diabetes was significantly (76.14±13.16) higher than patients who are systemically healthy with periodontitis (36.95±8.72) and gingivitis (23.38±8.80). CONCLUSION: Thus it can be concluded that vascular endothelial growth factor level was increased in periodontitis subjects with diabetes when compared with systemically healthy chronic periodontitis subjects and gingivitis subjects.
