The bachelor thesis is about importance of linguistics in school, a case study of Danish and Lithuanian students’ attitudes towards linguistics in school, comparing to university experience. The main research question is: how knowledge of linguistics in school affects students’ critical language awareness, their language attitudes and to what extent linguistics affects students’ choice of their further studies? It is based on the linguists' theories about the importance of linguistics in schools: linguists assert that linguistics strengthens students’ critical language awareness, improves tolerance over linguistic diversity in society and arouses students’ interest in analyzing language as an interesting object of research. Furthermore, the thesis includes brief overview of previous research analyses of the Danish and Lithuanian educational systems, focusing on different language perception in these societies and school curriculum. The main research material consists of Danish/Lithuanian students’ interview, their conscious language attitudes at school and university, and their source of motivation for studying linguistics at university. The method is qualitative, involving 16 Danish and Lithuanian students from 2-4 study programs, who focus on linguistics areas at university. The language perception of language institutions, curriculum and textbooks is strongly reflected in students’ responses, both in Lithuania and Denmark. In Lithuanian educational system dominates normative language approach, there is a lack of linguistics, education of critical language awareness and tolerance of linguistic diversity promotion. Meanwhile, in Denmark dominates descriptive grammar, students have linguistics introduction and develop their critical language awareness in school.
