Aging is a dynamic and irreversible process in which morphological and physiological modifications of the organism occur. These modifications may compromise the functional autonomy of the elderly, making them dependent on daily life activities (ADLs). Resistance training seems to have an effect on the recovery of the ability to perform ADLs. Objective: to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of resistance training on the functional capacity of the elderly. Materials and methods: The sample consisted of 12 elderly people, divided into two groups: Strength Group (GF) with mean age of 74.5 years (± 4.13) and Control Group (CG) with mean age of 64, 3 years (± 4.50). The proposed training for the GF was: flexor chair, extensor chair and leg press, articulated bench press, high pulley pull and lateral abduction, three times a week and for each exercise, 3 series with load of 8 to 12 maximal repetitions. In the evaluation of functional autonomy, the protocol of the Latin American Development Group for Maturity (GDLAM) was used, and two test-evaluations (T1 and T2) were performed in both groups with an interval of 8 weeks. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test for non-paired samples using Prism 5.0 software. Results: the mean time of execution of the tests for GF decreased after 8 weeks of training, with significant differences (* p <0.05). The GC presented an increase in the execution time of the LCLC, C10m and LPS tests. Conclusion: Resistance training improves Functional autonomy in the elderly.
