At the early stage of babbling, strong temporal constraints are imposed on the young speaker's production system by the biological rhythm of the jaw. However, the baby gradually reorganizes the timing of his mandibular displacements. The observation of syllable duration in 11 subjects between 8 and 12 months, would suggest that, at 10 months, the baby starts decreasing the duration of his syllables in order to introduce a rhythm specific for speech.
