; The subject matter of this thesis was to analyze archeological artefact (sword) in order to obtain informations about manufacturing proces and initial material. In the theoretical part it is described the importance of the microstructure analysis within material characterization. In experimental part the microstructure was analysed with optical and EDS scanning electrone micoscropy. It is discovered inhomogeneity of microstructure which depends about initial composition of the ore, carburising and termomechanical process. The important part was observation of non-metallic inclusions that vary in size and shape depending on the thermomechanical processing and the composition. From analyzed initial microstructure in oxyd layer on the sword surface there is visible ghost microstructure. The initial microstructure on the edge of the sword was not possible to detect because of the involvement of corrosion.
