نبذة مختصرة : The present work is the result of apprehensions and reflections arising during graduation on the relationship between the profession of Social Work and Education. Understanding the profession of Social Worker as a result of the socio-technical division of work in the development of the capitalist mode of production, we observe its performance based on its insertion in the socio-occupational space. Thus, oxygenating the debate about the limits and possibilities of professional practice in the field of education is one of our goals. To this end, we seek to explain the Brazilian education policy at its different levels and modalities of teaching, giving prominence to professional and technological education, having as empirical reference the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology, in particular the IFRN, addressing the trajectory of the institutes in Brazil and Rio Grande do Norte, from the first Schools of Crafts to the expansion of the Federal teaching network and nowadays. That said, in our work we particularize the professional exercise of the social worker based on institutional demands and student assistance programs. From the analyzes carried out during the mandatory curricular internship process, we understand that the Social Service at the IFRN is particularly concerned with the management of student assistance programs, which, due to the great demand, results in a move away from other important actions for the consolidation of the make professional based on the ethical political project of the category. In order to problematize the actions of Social Work at the IFRN, we sought to identify the limits and challenges of daily professional life, as well as the possibilities for actions beyond the demands arising from the aforementioned programs.
