      Neste artigo pretende-se refletir acerca das possibilidades de ascensão social de libertos no Rio Grande de São Pedro do Sul, no início do século XIX. Para tanto, analisa-se um caso singular, do preto forro Pedro Gonçalves, um lavrador que logrou tornar-se proprietário de escravos e de um pequeno rebanho de gado vacum. As fontes utilizadas foram o processo criminal aberto após o seu assassinato, no distrito do Caí, em 1819, bem como inventários post-mortem. As fontes foram analisadas com o objetivo de reconstituir aspectos da vida de Pedro Gonçalves. Enfocam-se sobretudo suas atividades econômicas, a constituição de seu patrimônio e suas relações com escravos e homens livres. ; This paper intends to reflect about the possibilities of upward mobility for freedmen in Rio Grande de São Pedro do Sul, in the beginning of the 19th century. It will be analyzed through a singular case, that of the freedman Pedro Gonçalves, a farmer who became an owner of slaves and of a small herd of cattle. The sources that have been used were the criminal proceeding that were opened after his murder, in the district of Caí, in 1819, as well as post-mortem inventories. The sources were analyzed with the intention of reconstructing some aspects of Pedro Gonçalves' life story. In this sense, we focused especially on his economic activities, the constitution of his estate and his relationship with slaves and free men.
