Abraham à Hébron

According to the Bible, Abraham lived at the oakland of Mamre, close to Hebron in Palestine. There he offered hospitality to three mysterious strangers under the oak of Mambre, near Hebron. Nowadays, a Russian Christian Orthodox monastery houses an old tree considered as the one of Abraham. Adnan, his guardian, is Muslim. The tradition of Abrahamic hospitality has been perpetuated in the old town of Hebron, through the daily distribution of a kitchen soup to the most deprived. Abraham, Sarah and their descendants are buried, according to tradition, in the Cave of the Patriarchs. After several successive appropriations, this sanctuary is today a place of division. ; D’après la Bible, Abraham a longtemps habité la chênaie de Mambré, près d’Hébron. C’est là qu’il a offert l’hospitalité à trois étrangers, considérés comme des anges dans la Genèse et dans le Coran. Cette tradition de l’hospitalité s’est perpétuée jusqu’à nos jours au sein du couvent russe orthodoxe de la Trinité et au centre de la ville d’Hébron où une soupe populaire est distribuée chaque jour aux plus démunis. Abraham, Sarah et leur descendance auraient été inhumés non loin de là, dans une grotte devenue le Caveau des Patriarches. Au cœur de la ville d’Hébron, l’édifice est aujourd’hui physiquement divisé : un espace est réservé aux musulmans, l’autre aux juifs.
