Painter Ed Clark lectured at the University of Connecticut on 3/10/1971 (2015-0002/RR119). Mr. Clark spoke about his life and struggles illustrated by slides. Edward Clark, painter, art teacher, airman, born 06 May, 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana, attended School of the Art Institute in Chicago (1947-1951); studied at L'Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (1952-1954); and served in the U.S. Air Force; was influenced by European painting and American jazz. Clark spent five additional years in Paris and became deeply influenced by the artist Nicolas de Stael. Upon returning to New York City in the late 1950s, Clark became well-known for his large-scale paintings, producing powerful brush strokes with a broom, and bright use of colors. Clark is considered one of the first painters to work with shaped canvases, an innovation that influenced contemporary art throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
