      In this work a technologically state-of-the-art growth furnace -- the FMF-module (Floating Zone Furnace with Rotating Magnetic Field) -- is under development for crystal growth experiments on the International Space Station. By using global simulations and the inverse modeling method, its optimal design and its performance could be obtained. By means of direct numerical simulations, the influence of solutal Marangoni convection on species transfer in a floating zone could be qualitatively explained. The instability mechanism of thermocapillary convection in a low Pr floating zone could be attributed to the interaction of buoyancy convection and surface flows. The direct numerical simulations were based on a full zone model.
