نبذة مختصرة : The study reveals that the concepts of public and private have changed over time. With the rise of the modern era, the old division between public and private was diluted, its notions acquired new meanings and that from modernity, there is an extension of the private sphere to the public space. In this sense, the research reveals the dialogical relationship between the public and the private in the reality of personal archives, having as specific objectives to characterize this duality through three archives.In this context, we sought to understand the personal or family archives, reflecting the private, public and even private personal dimensions of the city of João Pessoa/PB. As a methodological procedure, a semi-structured interview with some subjects from three files was used:Maurílio de Almeida Archive, Afonso Pereira Archive and José Simeão Leal Archive. Academic bibliographic references produced on these archives, as well as authors who reflect on the concepts addressed here, such as public, private and private, were carefully consulted to support the research. It concludes that problematizing the private, public and private categories becomes necessary for the reflective development of a theoretical and archival nature that involve personal archives, as these categories have different natures, which imply not only the characteristics with regard to the producing entity , but to user accessibility. ; O estudo revela que os conceitos de público e privado se transformaram ao longo tempo.
