During the last 15 years, the bloom formation of dinoflagellate benthic algae of tropical origin has increased in the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. Some of these, as is the case of Ostreopsiscf. ovata, produce toxic compounds, palytoxine (PLTX) and analogues, havingharmful effects on human health and benthic marine fauna. The study and knowledge of both physico-chemical factors (temperature, salinity, hydrodynamics, pH, etc.) that drive itsproliferation and the effects that these events cause on human health and benthic fauna are paramountto stablish an appropriate management and a prevention of their impacts.
