The 2023 campaign marks the first year of a three-year project to extensively survey the southern sector of the Verdun-sur-le-Doubs Latenian settlement, as part of the Confluence project. It reveals a relatively high density of structures dating from the Bronze Age to the Antique (and even Post-Antique) periods. The majority of remains relate to the Gaulish occupation, between La Tène C2 and D1b. The most striking feature of the area first appeared as a band of accumulated material, observed over a length of more than 30m, in an east-west orientation. It forms a very dense spread of bones (notably long bones, mandibles and scapulae), amphorae and various artefacts, accumulated within a slight depression around 4m wide. These include bronze and iron fibulae, glass and lignite bracelets and beads. Unusually for this site, several objects were found whole. Several human remains, represented by skull caps, were also found. Initial observations suggest between 3 and 6 individuals in a relatively small space. On either side of this space, the structures of the Latenian occupation are similar to those excavated in 2019-2021. In particular, there are pits with detrital fillings and deep pits. One of these, almost 3.50 metres below the current ground level, yielded the first human remains discovered on the site. The individual, in a lateral-ventral position, still had a thin copper alloy bracelet on his right wrist. The south-western corner of the sector is marked by the presence of structures that seem to be linked to water management. The most imposing of these, consisting of a sloping ramp and a 1.5m deep basin, could be interpreted as a pond or drinking trough. The lower part of the fill is very clayey, and several samples have been taken for palaeo-environmental analysis. Although there is no evidence to suggest that it was occupied during this period, its abandonment is clearly linked to the Augusto-Tiberian period. ; La campagne 2023 marque la première année d’un projet triennal, qui vise à reconnaître de manière ...
