Semangat Kosmopolitan sebagai Upaya Rekonsiliasi dengan Masa Lalu dalam Cerpen 'The Americans' Karya Viet Thanh Nguyen

This study elaborates how the idea of cosmopolitanism can be a solution to the reconciliation with the past of the Vietnam War as depicted in Viet Thanh Nguyen’s short story, “The Americans.” The qualitative method and close reading are used to show the intrinsic elements of the short story that lead to the issues about the consequence of war and its reparation. Cosmopolitanism as a concept is used to deepen the analysis regarding the responsibility for the reparation caused by war. Because the issue of multiple identities also appears in the text, the concept of hybridity by Homi Bhabha is also used. The finding shows resistance to reconciliation because one of the characters, Carver, is reluctant to encounter the past. The counter to Carver’s character is Claire—his daughter—and Legaspi, Claire’s boyfriend. Legaspi shows a cosmopolitan spirit and universal idea of responsibility. Claire, a multiracial character, rejects the solid notion of race and national identity. She combines her hybrid identity and cosmopolitan spirit to construct herself as a citizen of the world. Key words: cosmopolitan, hybridity, identity, Vietnam War ; Penelitian ini menguraikan bagaimana gagasan kosmopolitanisme dijadikan sebagai solusi untuk upaya rekonsiliasi dengan masa lalu Perang Vietnam dalam cerpen “The Americans” karya Viet Thanh Nguyen. Metode kualitatif dan pendekatan pembacaan dekat digunakan untuk memaparkan unsur intrinsik yang mengarah pada isu konsekuensi perang dan pemulihannya. Konsep kosmopolitanisme dimanfaatkan untuk memperdalam analisis terkait tanggung jawab dalam pembenahan kerusakan perang. Karena teks juga membicarakan isu identitas, konsep hibriditas menurut Homi Bhabha juga digunakan. Temuan menunjukkan adanya resistensi dalam proses rekonsiliasi karena tokoh veteran, Carver, enggan menghadapi masa lalunya. Penawar dari sikap tokoh Carver adalah anaknya, Claire, dan pacar anaknya, Legaspi yang menunjukkan semangat kosmopolitan dan tanggung jawab universal.
