Mathematics is a core UK school subject. However, the attainment of mathematics in students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) remains low. The Inclusive Teaching of Early Numeracy (i-TEN) programme was adapted from Mathematics Recovery (MR) which is a comprehensive programme for teaching numeracy to students struggling with their mathematics attainment. MR covers six key topics of numeracy content taught over five developmental stages (emergent, perceptual, figurative, counting-on and facile) covering (a) number words and numerals, (b) counting, and (c) grouping. To develop a fully inclusive early numeracy programme suitable for any student (aged 4-11) who is struggling with numeracy, we developed an adapted version of MR that could be used even with students who have moderate to severe learning difficulties (LD). As i-TEN was developed so that it could be used with all students, it includes strategies to deal with the range of learning challenges that occur when teaching numeracy in ...
