نبذة مختصرة : In the recent years, the sanitation sector has received more attention from the Brazilian government. However, the limited indebtedness capacity of the public sector is preventing meet the goal of 100% attendance of sanitation services in the country. In order to encourage the private sector participation, the model known as Public-Private Partnership – PPP – has been recently launched in Brazil. The first sanitation project was conducted by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development – BNDES – in the city of Rio Claro (SP). In this context, the research aims was to evaluate the first PPP in sanitation and discuss the strategic role of this mechanism in Brazil. Based on the case presented, the main findings suggest that the sustainability of the agents involved should be guaranteed to not allow that private interests prevail over the public, or vice versa.
