International audience ; Individuals can use different languages from their repertoires in order to communicate in a given situation. Here, we focus on a situation in which people speak spontaneously and without preparation. While codeswitching is a common phenomenon in a multilingual context, we highlight the more recent construct of “translanguaging” or “translinguistic production” (Narcy-Combes, 2018). The main goal is to determine whether translanguaging is a probable phenomenon in the spontaneous speech of Sri Lankan students and what primarily causes it. The article aims to contribute to the reflection on the didactics of languages in relation to plurilingualism and pluriculturality. We identify the presence of translanguaging and also transculturing in the Sri Lankan context through a qualitative approach. The term “translanguaging” is used here to mean that interlocutors pass from one language to another using their understanding in one and their expression in another, while “transculturing” refers to their transcultural behaviors. This research focuses on the transcultural behaviors (transculturing) of Sri Lankan students to explain their translinguistic productions (translanguaging). Knowledge of these phenomena is crucial for teaching training and when establishing an educational program for students who are learning an additional language in a varied or plural cultural environment.
