Amazonas y Penélopes: (auto)representaciones de las mujeres en la Primera Guerra Mundial ; Amazons and Penelopes: (Self)Representations of Women in the First World War

Si la propaganda bélica en Gran Bretaña instrumentalizó a las mujeres mediante su imagen más conservadora y heteronormativa (como las de la paciente Penélope o la madrina de guerra), la realidad del frente mostró una contribución femenina bien diferente, con ejemplos como los de Vera Brittain, Mary Borden y Enid Bagnold que vivieron y narraron el conflicto desde una perspectiva desgarradora alejada de todo sentimentalismo. Sus autobiografías transforman radicalmente la escritura femenina, hasta entonces relacionada sólo con lo romántico y lo trivial, y suponen un contradiscurso alejado de la memorialización oficial de la Gran Guerra, donde se privilegia la figura del combatiente y la retórica abstracta del honor y el patriotismo. Su confrontación con el trauma y el horror suscita en ellas una respuesta ética que puede analizarse desde la ontología de la vulnerabilidad de J. Butler y E. Lévinas. ; Whereas British war propaganda instrumentalized women through their most conservative and heteronormative images (as those of the patient Penelopes and the war godmothers), the reality of the battlefront evidenced a quite different female contribution exemplified by Vera Brittain, Mary Borden and Enid Bagnold who narrated the war from a first-hand piercing perspective deviating from other sentimentalizing accounts. Their autobiographies radically transform female writing heretofore only identified with romantic and trivial approaches, and formulate a counterdiscourse to the official memorializing of the Great War which prioritizes the figure of the combatant and the abstract rhetorics of honor and patriotism. Their confrontation with the war trauma and horror elicits an ethical response that is worth analysing within J. Butler’s and E. Lévinas’s social ontology of vulnerability.
