نبذة مختصرة : This article provides a legal and situational analysis on sustainable use of water as a human right and their conservation at international, national context and in Popayan city. To do this it resorts to a documental methodology under the criteria of legal protection of the right to water and their compliance by the responsible institutions as well as quantitatively determine which are the behaviors of citizens in relation to water consumption and their perception of compliance by the authorities, succeeding in identifying that shortcomings exist in Popayan on the part of the company providing the drinking water ser vices and that users on correcting these would become a point of reference nationally for the reasonable and sustainable use of water, whenever take into account the perceptions of users can be improved and give an effective compli ance to the current regulations. ; Este artículo realiza un análisis jurídico y situacional sobre el uso sostenible del agua como derecho humano y su conservación en el contexto internacional, nacional y en la ciudad de Popayán. Para ello se acude a una metodología documental bajo los criterios de la protección jurídica del derecho al agua y su cumplimiento por parte de las instituciones encargadas, así como también cuantitativamente determinar cuáles son los comportamientos de los ciudadanos frente al consumo del agua y su percepción de cumplimiento por parte de las autoridades, logrando identificar que en la ciudad de Popayán existen falencias por parte de la empresa prestadora del servicio de agua potable y de los usuarios que al corregirse serían referente nacional para el uso razonable y sostenible del agua potable, toda vez que al tener en cuenta las percepciones de los usuarios se puede mejorar y dar un efectivo cumplimiento a la normatividad vigente.
