The ALTRANS Energiesactivity has been funded by the I-Lab GOLTEN project. ; International audience ; artial discharges (PDs) monitoring is a commontool for diagnosing electrical systems. An innovative, low-costsensor for distance detection and positioning of partial PDs hasbeen developed. An ambitious challenge for this PD monitoringsystem is to predict dielectric breakdowns on a grid andparticularly in MVAC cables. The first part of the articledemonstrates the proper functioning of this sensor on a testbench. In a second part, monitoring measurements of PDactivity issued from artificial defects are presented. PD initiatedin submillimetric cavities were collected. Parameters and PDpatterns have been interpreted with the aim to correlate withthe electrical treeing propagation until breakdown. The finalsection is dedicated to a concise review of electrical treeingmonitoring. Analysis of existing approaches are presented, aswell as the interesting opportunities offered by the sensor.
