نبذة مختصرة : While a minority enjoyed abundance, hunger, violence, and enslavement plagued the poor communities in the Persian period. Judah, the poorest of the surrounding territories, suffered from a process of impoverishment and double exploitation. The tribute levied by the Persian Empire, added to the tribute levied for the temple in Jerusalem, appears in all its strength and violence. The article wants to show that the books of Nehemiah and Job, portray the intense social conflict of the period. The widow, the orphan and the poor are the main victims. The pain of hunger, the sight of their sons and daughters being enslaved and the increasing debt intensifies when one understands that to the totality of these tragedies is added the absence of solidarity from those who should behave as brothers and sisters. The echo of the women who protested at that time, echoes in history the clamor of the slaves in Egypt, updating the theology of the exodus. The voices of poor women in the books of Nehemiah and Job echo the "intolerable scandal" that is seen in the "Barn of the world," where the care for the orphan, the widow, the destitute, the poor, and the foreigner continues to be precarious. In this sense, the article proposes to reflect on the mission of the Church in the midst of the hunger that is spreading; in the midst of the clamor of the hungry of today, in the year in which the Fraternity Campaign takes up the theme: "Fraternity and Hunger", remembering Christ's imperative: "Give them something to eat yourselves" (Mt 14:16).
