Social capital and political socialization of youth in Brazil ; Capital social e socialização política dos jovens no Brasil

Based upon research at the national and international level, this article examines the theoretical references related to political socialization, political culture and social capital, as elements needed to understand the youth’s education and their democratic practices. The study investigates the political socialization process and social capital of the Brazilian youth at the beginning of the 21st century, in the context of the debate about the democratic consolidation in the country. The youth are portrayed as a historical and social construction, and their profile is described through the contextual impacts caused by the process of globalization, as well as through the structural impacts caused by the hybrid political culture which mixes elements of authoritarianism and democracy. Key words: social capital, political socialization, youth, democracy. ; Com base em investigações de cunho nacional e internacional, estabeleceram-se referenciais teóricos relacionados à socialização, à cultura política e ao capital social necessários para a compreensão da formação da juventude e para a prática democrática. O estudo investiga a socialização política e o capital social dos jovens brasileiros no início do século XXI, no contexto do debate sobre a consolidação democrática no País. A juventude é retratada como uma construção histórica e social, e seu perfil é traçado por meio dos impactos conjunturais desencadeados pelo processo de globalização e, também, por meio de impactos estruturais tendo em vista a cultura política híbrida de autoritarismo e democracia.
