Conclusion

The detailed, grounded and inter-disciplinary research approach used in this study has been used to paint a rich picture of a fascinating, relatively new, fast-changing and significant industry. The key findings also lead to policy recommendations for the full range of industry stakeholders. Recommendations are made on key industry issues including the development of alternative seaweed products, foreign investment in processing, interventionist industry policy, marine spatial planning, propagule production and distribution, marine plastics management, farm extension programmes, government and foreign assistance programmes, statistical systems, the understanding of employment in the industry, improving seaweed quality using market-based mechanisms and supporting farmer access to financial services. Insights from the book may also assist industry stakeholders as they facilitate the next stages of industry development and expansion into new areas, both in Indonesia and other countries. ; Full Text
