Bovine gastrointestinal helminthic refugia is constituted by eggs and larvae in pastures, so they escape exposure to anthelmintic treatment and constitute a reservoir of susceptibility genes to these drugs. Therefore, if treatment is applied when there is little or no refugia, selection pressure for anthelmintic resistance increases.
