نبذة مختصرة : The aging process can be influenced by the lifestyle adopted by the individual and the social determinants of health, resulting in limitations arising from morphological, functional, biological and psychological changes, which can be intensified during a hospitalization process. Objective: To analyze the prevalence and relationship between dependence to perform basic activities of daily living and risk of sarcopenia in hospitalized elderly. Method: Cross-sectional, quantitative study, carried out with elderly hospitalized in the medical and surgical sectors, from March 2021 to June 2021, in a university hospital in Paraná. We applied the sociodemographic instrument, Katz Index Scale to assess the functional capacity of the elderly in relation to basic activities of daily living (BADL), SARC-F Questionnaire to select the risk of sarcopenia, assessment of muscle strength with a dynamometer and measurement of Calf circumference as a predictor of muscle quantity and function. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: The final sample comprised 162 elderly, predominantly male (55.6%) and aged between 60 and 69 years (59.9%). The prevalence of dependents for performing BADL was 66.7% and for sarcopenia risk 61.7%. It was found that elderly people at risk of sarcopenia had 3.8 more chances of being dependent to perform BADL (p<0.001). Conclusion: We identified a high prevalence of dependence in performing BADL and risk of sarcopenia, these conditions being associated. Elderly people with dependence to perform ABVD had a higher risk of sarcopenia.
