      Tese apresentada à Universidade Federal de Lavras, como parte das exigências do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Microbiologia Agrícola, área de concentração em Microbiologia Agrícola, para a obtenção do título de Doutor. ; Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) ; Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) ; Microbiologia Agrícola ; Soil microbiology is no longer an issue confined to the classrooms of higher education, high school or research laboratories, becoming a subject related to basic citizenship issues, involving the environment, daily routine and hygiene. High school teaching of Soil Microbiology, when it occurs, is characterized by a technical, merely informative focus and passive knowledge acquisition. In order for this reality to be altered, we must find, create and present new approaches which facilitate learning and allow the student a more active situation, in a way that he becomes an agent, and not an object of the teaching-learning process. In the search for subsidies which support this hypothesis, we applied a structures questionnaire in order to verify the knowledge in soil microbiology of biology licentiate undergraduates of two universities, one public and the other private. With the analysis of this questionnaire, we verified that the future teachers presented many deficiencies in regard to the specific content of soil microbiology. To minimize this lack of information by part of the lay public and collaborate with their awareness regarding the importance of soil microorganisms, we elaborated a course of continued education in soil microbiology with the objective of preparing the High School teachers to work this theme in a different manner. This course emphasized the necessity of the teacher adopting an investigative, interdisciplinary and contextualizing methodology, stimulating the students to knowing soil microbiology as a science.
