; The main purpose of this research was to determine, characterize and analyze deforestation in Caparo Forest Reserve (CFR) Barinas State - Venezuela during the 1987-1994-2007 time periods by using digital satellite images and historical cartographic data. Results are alarming due to the magnitude and rapidity with which deforestation has occurred in CFR. Between 1987 and 1994, forest floor decreased by 14.33%, and went from 147,119.9 ha to 126,025.1 ha. That is to say, 21,095 ha were lost (3,014 ha per year) which represents a very high annual deforestation rate: 2.0%. From 1994 to 2007, CFR had the highest deforestation rate which was 4.5%/year. Consequently, 5,759 ha were lost per year destined primarily to grasslands for agricultural and livestock activities. Finally, during the time period from 1987 to 2007, forests in CFR decreased by 65.2%, and went from 147,119.9 ha to 51,158.6 ha. This means that 95,961.2 ha were lost (4,798 ha/year). The average annual rate was 3.2% which is a “very high” deforestation rate. Therefore, social actors, public institutions and authorities in charge, present in the CRF must monitor and control this situation immediately. ; 107-132 ; parraa@ula.ve ; angnest@hotmail.com ; semestral
