Problematic Internet use on smartphone and associated health factors among students ; Usage problématique d’Internet sur smartphone et facteurs associés en santé chez les étudiants

Background: Since its democratization, Internet is mostly used on smartphones these days. Researchers have identified a new public health problem: Problematic smartphone use (PSU). The link between PSU and students’ physical and mental health is well documented around the world. Several scales exist to measure PSU. The objective was to quantify and describe Problematic Internet use on smartphone (PIUS) and associated health factors. Method: An observational cross-sectional quantitative study, using an anonymous self -administered online questionnaire and via QR code on sites, was carried out among students at the Universityof La Réunion. PIUS was measured by the Internet Addiction Test-Smartphone (IATS) score, factors related to physical, mental health and smartphone use were described by self-reporting questions. Results: A total of 618 students were included from May to June 2023. The prevalence of PIUS was 13%. The main use of the smartphone was devoted to social networks. Factors associated with PIUS included probable anxiety, Results: probable depression, connection time, sleep quality and duration, duration of physical activity, some of online behavioral addictions, and a history of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Conclusion: Simple measures and advice could be defined for students to prevent PIUS and promote their well-being.
