Artykuł śledzi dwojaką obecność motywu nocy i snu, prezentuje Watowską ambiwalencję w traktowaniu tych kategorii, by następnie zastanowić się, dlaczego ciemność może okazać się wybawieniem od lęku i w jaki sposób (oraz w jakim kontekście) traci ona swoje negatywne znaczenie. Czytając Wata przez pryzmat jego zainteresowań teologicznych (Kabały, teologii apofatycznej, rosyjskich rewizji chrześcijaństwa spod znaku Rozanowa), tekst pokazuje, że "esencja czerni", której poszukiwał poeta, może być traktowana jako próba przezwyciężenia modernistycznego lęku przed fragmentaryzacją świata i poznania - jest ona bowiem odwróconą całością. ; In art the images of night, sleep, and darkness often function as correlatives of various kinds of fear, fear of the unknown, the subconscious, the irrational. Aleksander Wat taps into that storehouse of disturbing, inexplicable images in the cycle ‘Dreams’ in his volume entitled Poems. There a string of taperecorded whispers evokes the night, opening up the door to a traumatic past and sometimes to an irrational and horrifying religious experience. Yet at the time for Wat sleep can be a haven, a shelter from pain, a consciousness, a fear of the visible. Its dark shadow creates a space for the poet’s lyrical confessions and gives him cover from the tyranny of the physical, the bodily, the vulgar. As the unknown ceases to terrify, it seems to offer a promise of ‘nexistence’, a negative existence without self-awareness and submerged in nothingness. This article examines the ambivalent motifs of night and sleep in Wat’s ‘Dreams’ and discusses the double claim that darkness can lose its negative connotations and save us from fear. Reading Wat from the perspective of his theological interests (which ranged from the Kabbalah and apophatic theology to Russian critics of Christianity like Vasily Rozanov) the article argues that Wat’s quest for the ‘essential blackness’ (a uniform, elementary whole) should be treated as an attempt to overcome the modernist fear of the fragmentation of the world ...
