Carcinoma developing in the neo-oesophagus following gastroplasty

Carcinoma developing after gastroplasty and fundoplication has beendocumented in only five cases. We report a further case occurring in apatient 4 years after initial surgery. The tumour originated in the newlycreated tubular extension. There was no evidence of a columnar lining inthe true oesophagus prior to surgery. The development, technique andcomplications of gastroplasty and partial fundoplication are discussed withspecial mention of the diagnostic problems when a tumour develops in apatient who has undergone this procedure.
