The Problem of Political Identity in the Conditions of Modern Crises and Conflicts ; Проблема політичної ідентичності в умовах сучасних криз та конфліктів

We proceed from the fact that identity is one of the urgent problems of modern political science. The purpose of the study is to single out those dimensions of identity that play an important role in contemporary political conflicts. We determine the pluralism of identities of the average citizen, which is connected with his or her performance of a large number of social roles. The author’s interpretation of identity is explained as the relations of a person with a certain political group and the development of a corresponding political position. We used a research methodology based on systemic, comparative, structural-functional, behavioural and other methods of Political Science. In addition, the achievements of Sociology, Psychology, History and other sciences were used. It has been explained that ethnic identity in the 21st century still has a strong conflict potential because many ethnic groups feel severely disadvantaged in modern political systems. The importance of regional identity research is demonstrated on the examples of Italy and Germany. Class identity has powerful potential, as large numbers of people are in a condition or a situation that does not meet their expectations. Protest movements and revolutions are the logical consequences of the contradictions based on class identification. It has been demonstrated that ideological identity is often used to justify territorial expansion, which is practiced in aggressive forms. A topical example of an aggressive quasi-ideology is the «Russian world», which is characterized by chauvinism, revanchism and militarism. Russia’s attack on Ukraine fully corresponds to the anti-Western rhetoric of the Russian leaders, as there is a «black and white» vision of the world in the modern Russian official discourse.
