International audience ; 1944 veröffentlichte Esther Kreitman ihren Roman Brilyanten (Brillanten), der über das Schicksal von Berman und dessen Familie zwischen Antwerpen und London beim Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs berichtet. Orte des Zusammenlebens und der Verbundenheit mit der hinter sich gelassenen Welt des Schtetl werden hauptsächlich mit Frauenfiguren besetzt. Sie stehen den Tempeln des Börsenhandels und des Diamantengeschäfts ebenso wie den großen Kaufhäusern gegenüber, welche unter Rückgriff auf das Leitmotiv des Karnevals (die Kirmes taucht in den Antwerper Szenen immer wieder auf) zu einem Babylon werden. Die Besetzung (im Freudschen Sinne) der Stadt ist geschlechtsbezogen und variiert je nach den Figuren; die mame-loshn wird mit dem Eindringen unterschiedlicher, für jenen mehrsprachigen Kontext kennzeichnender Stimmen konfrontiert und dazu gedrängt, ihre verstörte Identität neu zu definieren. Somit wird die Stadt zu einem Raum, den man im Sinne von Homi Bhabha in The Location of Culture als „dritten Raum“ und „Gotteslästerung“ bezeichnen kann. ; Esther Kreitman published in 1944 her novel Brilyantn [Diamonds]. The novel describes Berman and his family between Antwerp and London at the time of the advent of the First World War. Places of conviviality and connection with the abandoned world of the shtetl, mainly invested by the female characters, is opposite to the temples of financial speculation and the diamond trade, as well as the department stores that constitute a Babylon. This thematic is encouraged by the theme carnival run – the kermis punctuates the various episodes in Antwerp. The city is invested differently depending on the gender of the characters, and the mame-loshn is encountering the intrusion of multiple voices, that reveals a plurilingual context where each idiom worries the others and urges Yiddish to redefine a troubled identity.
