      학위논문 (석사)-- 서울대학교 대학원 : 인문대학 협동과정 공연예술학전공, 2019. 2. 홍진호. ; Throughout the course of history, art has dealt with personal and social distress regardless of its medium(be it painting, movie, music or theatre). Many such artworks were about incidents that left a deep trauma to individuals and society. According to a number of reports in the media, actors immersed in realistic depiction of traumatic events in movies or theatrical performances later experienced nightmares, flashbacks or depression similar to typical PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms. Such reported symptoms indicate that they may have suffered actual trauma, or psychological distress amounting to trauma. However, it has not been specifically studied how such psychological problems can be caused. One of the reasons why this problem was not fully discussed could be due to the prevailing sentiment after the holocaust - the most traumatic event of in the history of modern time. The ethical and philosophical discourse has been about how cautious an artist should be when representing trauma, or how impossible it is to fully represent trauma, so that the actual problem after representing trauma was hard to discuss. Since the Holocaust, all forms of arts (literature, film and painting) have actively made the representation of it in Germany. The intellectuals actively discussed whether such heavy topic could be represented in an art form without distorting or trivializing the event, and whether it is ethical to represent it in an art form. These discussions have been repeated and are still an important issue today, when traumatic events are omnipresent. In psychotherapy, researches were much more focused on positive effects rather than negative effects of acting when representing trauma – as a result, the psychological distress of ordinary actors has remained largely unnoticed.
