Prevalencia de las enfermedades neurológicas en el Valle del Cauca. Estudio Neuroepidemiológico Nacional (EPINEURO).

El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la prevalencia de punto de ocho enfermedades neurológicas, utilizando una encuesta transversal de dos fases, de acuerdo con el protocolo de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) para Estudios Epidemiológicos de Enfermedades Neurológicas. En la primera fase se identificaron los individuos sospechosos de tener enfermedad neurológica (fase I de tamizaje); en la segunda fase un neurólogo hacía el diagnóstico específico utilizando guías y criterios establecidos. En la fase I se entrevistaron 998 individuos en el Valle del Cauca. Para la región, se obtuvieron las siguientes prevalencias ajustadas por edad y los intervalos de confianza (IC) al 95%: migraña 65.3 (IC 95% 48.8-81.9); epilepsia 3.9 (IC 95% 0.0-8.4); neuropatía periférica 14.4 (IC 95% 7.4- 21.3); enfermedad cerebrovascular 6.8 (IC 95% 1.7-12.0); secuelas de trauma craneoencefálico 3.7 (0.0-7.4) y demencia 21.9. The objective of the present study was to determine, using a population survey, the point prevalence of eight neurological disorders. The survay used an extended version of the WHO Protocol for Epidemiological Studies of Neurological Disorders, administered door to door by trained personnel (phase I). Subjects were classified as suspects of having one of the neurological diseases of interest, based on the responses of the screening. Suspects were examined on location by a clinical neurologist, blind to the responses of Phase I. Diagnosis of neurological disease was based on established guidelines and criteria. In Valle del Cauca, in phase I, 998 subjects were interviewed. The following prevalences per thousand population adjusted for age and 95% confidence interval (CI) by approximation to a Poisson distribution were obtained: migraine 65.3 (CI 95% 48.8-81.9); epilepsy 3.9 (CI 95% 0-8.4); peripheral neuropathy 14.4 (CI 95% 7.4-21.3); cerebrovascular disease 6.8 (CI 95% 1.7- 12); head injury related disability 3.7 (CI 95% 0-7.4) and dementia (age 50 and over) 21.9.
