نبذة مختصرة : June 23, 1936. Annual Report of The Department of Education of The American University at Cairo To the President Dear Sir, I beg to submit the following report of the Department of Education for the year 1935-36. I. Teacher Training (1) Publicia In June 195 it was thought advisable to make provision for public-ity through the press in order to draw attention to the training of in-service teachers. Dean Galt kindly suggested that the press summer campaign for the College of Arts and Sciences should include a statement, advertising our teacher training classes. The suggestion was followed and incuiries were referred to the Registrar for replies. As in previous years a large number of these inquiries came from teachers in the provinces, who wanted to study by correspondence. I do not believe we can prevent such inquiries even if we indicate in our advertisement that no correspondence courses are offered. The result of this type of publicity has been quite satisfactory, although there is reason to believe that our own students are our best means of ad-vertising our afternoon classes. Judging from the interviews I had with the new students this year, more than half of them came to us through their friends who had joined us the year before. (2) Enrolment The total number of students who enrolled this year is 38, of whom 32 continued throughout the year. Out of the latter 17 are old; 19 are Moslems; 23 are teachers in Government schools, and 5 in non-Government schools, while 4 are engaged in other careers; 8 are women. The following gives, a picture of their qualifications: Higher Training Diploma. 8 Institute of Pedagogy Diploma ' 2 Higher Agriculture School Diploma 1 Intermediate Training College Diploma 8 The Baccalauria 1 B.A. from A.U.C. 1 B.A. from A.U.B. 1 A::1erican Girls College 5 Sania Diploma for Girls 2 Diploma from London 1 Diploma of Law from China 1 In addition to the 38 mentioned, 8 more, of whom 4 were women, attended trial classes but could not continue because of language difficulties. 40
