Numerous studies suggest that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with obesity and that the prevalence of Traumatic Life Events (TLE) is high in patients seeking treatment for obesity. The primary objective of this work was to study the feasibility of implementing a standardized PTSD screening in a Specialized Obesity Center (CSO) amongst patients hospitalized for obesity assessment. The secondary objectives were to measure in this population the prevalence of TLEs exposure, the prevalence of PTSD, and the rate of diagnosed patients accepting trauma-focused care. Patients were encouraged to fill in two self-questionnaires, the LEC-5 and PCL-5. Amongst the 81 patients hospitalized for obesity during the study period, 75 were included in this study. Of these, 90% completed the LEC-5 and 76% the PCL-5. Approximately 88.2% of the LEC-5 respondents reported having experienced at least one TLE in their lifetime. Amongst the patients who responded to the PCL-5, 15 (26%) had a provisional diagnosis of PTSD. The diagnosis was confirmed for 8 of the 10 patients assessed to date at CAPS, yielding a high prevalence of PTSD in the study sample of about 14%. 7 out of the 8 diagnosed patients agreed to a specialized followup at the Regional Psychotrauma Center (CRP). Conclusion: Screening for PTSD is feasible as a common process amongst patients hospitalized for obesity assessment. The high prevalence of TLEs and PTSD in this population highlights the importance of a link between CSO and CRP.
