      Florianópolis is the capital of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The island and its coastal nature, together with a subtropical climate turned Florianópolis into a famous tourist destination in the 1990s. The rapid concentration of higher education institutions and technology-based companies have more recently made it possible for Florianópolis to become an important hub of innovation and knowledge for Brazil. This study aims to uncover and present socio-economic, geographic, and governmental conditions, city plans and processes, as well as to describe the city's historical progress, concentrating on the main domains of development to explore its transition journey from a tourist island to the prospect of an island of innovation and an intelligent city. The results of the study reveal insights into new creative processes that may be useful not only to Florianopolis but also to other places, particularly tourist cities or islands, that aim to diversify their economic activities and aspire to knowledge-based development.
