Qualitative study on the extension of paternity leave and the observations made on the parental unit by independent midwives in Isère ; Étude qualitative portant sur l’allongement du congé paternité et les observations constatées sur la cellule parentale par les sages-femmes libérales de l’Isère

Objective: This study aims to analyze what independent midwives in Isère have observed about the parental unit during their postpartum visits since the extension of paternity leave. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study based on nine semi-structured interviews with willing independent midwives practicing in the Isere department. The interviews took place from November 9, 2022 to January 16, 2023. Results: The midwives noticed a more significant presence of the father during the postpartum period. There are divergences in the uptake of paternity leave depending on various factors. Fathers are more involved with their baby, more invested in family life in general and more supportive of mothers. However, some still have difficulties finding their place, which shows the importance of support from independent midwives and other perinatal professionals. Most of them express a desire for further extension of paternity leave. The mother’s mental health is reported to have significantly improved. Families are calmer and more serene thanks to this additional time off granted to the father. Paternity leave allows fathers to bond with their baby and a more balanced distribution of tasks between the mother and the father. The major drawback observed is the problem of domestic violence. Conclusion: The extension of paternity leave represents a future perspective for a new generation of fathers who are highly invested in their parental role, which is beneficial for the entire family.
