From blackboard to hemicycle. Social Logics of an Attachment to Professional Politics ; Du tableau noir à l’hémicycle. Logiques sociales d’un attachement à la politique professionnelle

International audience ; This article analyses the logics of attachment to professional politics of teachers who became members of the National Assembly. Politics was not their only occupation over the course of their professional lives, and by looking at the construction and development of their political careers, it is possible to go beyond the opposition between political professionals and professionals in politics, and to clarify the logics of political professionalisation. The analysis is based on an extended prosopography of MPs from five terms of office (between 1978 and 2017), which details the socio-demographic properties and the political and professional paths. The analysis shows that the mobility of teacher-MPs towards politics very often proves to occur without any real return to the worlds of teaching and without any desire to return, leading to a distancing from the professional space of origin both during and at the end of the parliamentary mandate. The case of teachers highlights upward social mobility as a driving force behind political careers and invites us to correlate the attachment to professional politics not only to the dynamics of political careers, but also to the professional trajectory and to the social trajectory of class and gender. ; L’article traite des logiques d’attachement à la politique professionnelle des enseignant·es devenu·es membres de l’Assemblée nationale.
