The Quiet Friend

The Quiet Friend For piano, percussion and electronics For Ross Gibson composed in March 2023. 15 minutes. The electronics part is embedded in the score (the file with the .dsz extension), and should be played from a subwoofer under the piano, connected to the ipad via a mini jack out. The level should never overpower the instruments The score should be read in the Decibel ScorePlayer application on an iPad. PROGRAM NOTE The Quiet Friend is the sound of the piano when it resonates after the hammer strike, and this is the space where the percussion interacts with the piano, with instruments that create duration, rather than attack. The most important parts of this piece are the delicate floating sounds that slide in and out of audibility; the end of the sound, the outmost audible range of pitch and volume, and the space around it that the music cretes for us. This piece is dedicated to Ross Gibson (1956-2023), collaborator and friend in music and poetry. I wish we had met sooner. It was premiered by my incredible colleagues at Monash University, Louise Devenish and Aura Go, on International Womens Day 2023.
