Olhares sobre a relação entre humanos e animais de companhia na vivência da doença crónica ; The relation between humans and companion animals in chronic illness contexts

This article reviews and discusses, from an interdisciplinary perspective, recent research developments focused on the different influences companion animals have in human chronic illness, and vice-versa. The article identifies the need to understand the inter-species relational dynamics around this experience. It highlights the beneficial role that companion animals may have in the lives of humans suffering from a chronic illness, as well as the role humans play when animals are chronically ill. Furthermore, it points out the importance of considering the interconnections between humans and non-humans.
