This thesis examines the enduring influence of Jim Crow–era rhetoric on contemporary policing and governance in Mississippi. Through a detailed discourse analysis, it explores how historical language and symbolism related to white supremacy continue to shape societal attitudes and law enforcement practices. The study highlights how modern policing in Mississippi, with its roots in segregationist policies, perpetuates an “us versus them” mentality that marginalizes Black communities within the state. This analysis reveals that despite legal and socio-normative advances, the racial biases embedded in Mississippi’s law enforcement culture remain deeply entrenched. This thesis explores how the divisive “thin blue line” narrative—whereby police officers serve in a mythological warrior role protecting the civilized “us” from the chaotic and lawless “them”—creates a strong in-group allegiance that promulgates corruption and its concealment. This thesis contends that words truly matter and by dissecting the past’s influence on the present, this work contributes to the broader conversation on racial justice and policing reform in America. ; Distribution Statement A.
