Between the Sheets: An Exploration of Video Art as a Medium for Intimacy and Private Reflection is a multi-projection installation that uses video art to create an environment for peaceful thought and mediation. The design consists of a corridor leading to an area encircled by a large curved wall. Viewers enter the corridor alone and are greeted by a young woman projected on the wall of the corridor. She guides the viewer through the passage to the curved area where a life-sized projection of a forest awaits. Here, the viewer is invited to stay to enjoy the freedom from distraction and peaceful atmosphere. Between the Sheets focuses on the transformation of a space and changes a plain and unattractive room into a place for imagination and calm retreat. It is designed as a sanctuary from stress and functions to encourage relaxation and reflection. Between the Sheets offers the seclusion necessary to deep thought while providing the inspiration of nature—a rare combination in an increasingly industrialized world where over population floods the few natural spaces available to city and suburban residents. The intimacy it offers is both in the form of immersion with the space and connection with oneself. As viewers are given the opportunity to be alone with their thoughts in an atmosphere of security, they may gain from meditation or deep contemplation some sense of self-appreciation or self-discovery. As Between the Sheets grants the viewer the freedom of self-directed contemplation, each viewer’s encounter will be unique and highly personal. The installation is an experiential artwork and, without creating a narrow focus for thought, provides an environment primed for calm, reflective contemplation.
