“Music school is behind me”: A case of “failed” musical socialisation ; « L’école de musique, c’est derrière moi » : chronique d’une socialisation musicale « ratée »

International audience ; This article proposes to study in depth the musical socialisation of a conservatory’s former student with a social profile that is not very well represented in this institution (working-class background from North African immigration). Structured as a sociological portrait, it retraces a path that starts out promising but ends with the student dropping out of the conservatory music curriculum. The analysis shows that the expected discipline (regular practice on the instrument) does not happen and explains the mode of appropriation of the musical playing that he develops. Experienced as a leisure activity, based on playing hic et nunc, this does not correspond to the school mode of musical appropriation centered on a distanced relationship to playing, both by the scriptural logic and by the establishment of a deferred satisfaction that is imposed. Focusing on a singular case, the article intends to contribute to the definition of the specific school mode of socialisation proposed in conservatories. ; Cet article se propose d’étudier en détail la socialisation musicale d’un ancien élève de conservatoire dont le profil social est peu représenté dans ce type d’institution (milieu populaire issu de l’immigration maghrébine). Présenté sous forme de portrait sociologique, il retrace un parcours dont les débuts sont prometteurs, mais qui se termine par l’abandon du cursus musical du conservatoire. L’analyse montre que la disciplinarisation attendue (travail régulier de l’instrument) ne « prend pas » et rend compte du mode d’appropriation de la pratique musicale qu’il développe. Vécue sur le mode du loisir, s’appuyant sur le jeu hic et nunc, celle-ci ne répond pas au mode scolaire d’appropriation musicale centré sur un rapport distancié à la pratique, tant par la logique scripturale que par l’instauration d’une satisfaction différée qu’il impose.
