Trabalho de conclusão de curso (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Centro de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Curso de Relações Internacionais, RS, 2023. ; The Amazon is a region of enormous relevance throughout the world, but mainly for the countries that are part of it, for numerous reasons, from economic, social and cultural issues, as well as border issues. For this reason, National Defense and Extra-regional Deterrence in the Amazon are important aspects for member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, however, they are not treated with due relevance. The present work seeks to explain the status of the Amazon, in the light of official documents, such as the White Paper on Defense and other Defense Policies, in the defense policies of these countries and, for this purpose, it aims to comparatively evaluate the defense policies and national strategy adopted by ACTO member countries, in order to explain the aforementioned dynamics. A descriptive analysis will be carried out, using a synchronic comparative study between the objects of study, that is, the official documents of the ACTO member countries. The hypothesis of the work is that the Amazon has an unequal status in official documents and in accordance with the defense policies of ACTO member countries, which is even perceived from the documentary selection, as not all States present and provide this tool. Furthermore, considering the analytical dimensions proposed in this work, the region rarely appears as an element to be considered in extra-regional deterrence, that is, as an important space to be seen within deterrence discussions and policies in defense policies. The study is justified by the importance of understanding the convergences and/or divergences of the agendas and actions of the ACTO member countries with regard to External Deterrence towards the Amazon, since the greatness of the region and its riches, in addition to the attempts at external interference.
