نبذة مختصرة : Background: Mental illness is increasing and affects increased people in our society. The first contact with care is often in primary care, where general nurses work. Both patients and relatives describe that they often experience suffering from care in the encounter with care. Nurses are responsible for meeting patients and relatives and for following laws and guidelines. Purpose: To describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients with mental illness. Method: General literature review, four articles are qualitative, five are quantitative and one is mixed methods. Results: The results are described in two themes, the importance of knowledge, collaboration and education and the importance of lack of time, caring relationships and inadequacy the importance. The result highlights the need for nurses to improve their skills to respond and care according to the best evidence. The results also address nurses' description of inadequacy due to lack of time and lack of cooperation. Conclusion: There appears to be a lack of competence on the part of the nurses, as well as a fear and frustration at not being able to provide adequate care due to the lack of knowledge. The ignorance generated a negative attitude towards patients with mental illness, a lack of time for patient care and a lack of resources also appeared. Increased competence of nurses can contribute to reducing the fear and stigmatization of caring for this patient group.
