      Introduction: In the transition from secondary education to higher education, students face several challenges, which are likely to disturb their well-being and happiness. Since this is a subjective construct, studies are essential for a better understanding of the phenomenon. Objective/s: To explore the concept of happiness and the factors that influence it in 1st year nursing students at a higher education institution. Methods: Exploratory, qualitative study; convenience sample of 63 1st year nursing students. Data collected through 2 open questions and analyzed with thematic content analysis technique (Bardin), using NVivo. Results: Three themes that conceptualize happiness were identified: i) positive interpersonal relationships, ii) personal fulfillment and iii) physical and psychological balance. Of the various factors that contribute to happiness, the following stand out: “personal relationships”, “personal fulfillment”, “health and well-being” and “living conditions and environment”, including school success. Conclusion: This study highlights happiness as a complex and multidimensional concept, influenced by several factors, internal and external, interconnected and complementary. Knowing these factors makes it possible to design interventions that promote healthy environments that are conducive to learning and optimizing health. ; Introducción: En la transición de la educación secundaria a la educación superior, los estudiantes enfrentan varios desafíos que probablemente perturben su bienestar y felicidad.
